blue crowned conure, parrot

blue crowned conure

The Blue-crowned Conure originates from Eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and the northwestern provinces of Argentina. They are nomadic in nature and prefer bush country and open woods. They can be seen in large flocks and sometimes cause damage to farm crops. Blue-crowned Conures prefer fruits, especially mangoes, cactus, seeds and blossoms of the ceibo trees.

Blue-crowns make comical pets, bond well with their owners, and are know as one of the best talkers among all conures. Their voices may become shrill when alarmed but seem to call loudly only when very excited. They are very playful and can keep you entertained for hours.

Cockatoos

Cockatoos are similar to dogs in that they thrive on affection and touch but usually do not develop extensive vocabularies. African Grey Parrots, noted for their great talking ability, fall between these two personality categories, having traits of both. Greys tend to be more individualistic, so it depends on the Grey as to the kind of personality it may have.

Macaws

Macaws do not make ideal apartment pets because of their twice-daily screaming sessions, at sunrise and sunset, and their ability to dismantle anything they can easily reach, such as the apartment building! However, for those who have a suitable environment, macaws make great pets and can develop pretty good vocabularies and fascinating antics.

What to Look For.

Look for a bird that is interactive and interested in sights and sounds. Look for a baby that expresses interest and attention by puffing out its head and neck feathers, stretching its wings (singly with a leg out or both shoulders stretched straight up), bobbing its head up and down solicitously or quickly wagging its tail from side to side.

These easily observable happiness behaviors are indications that the bird is interested in what is going on.
